Electromagnetic Noisemaker
In this project, a team will build a device that emits a selectable spectrum of electrical noise with the intention of testing the susceptibility of other electronics.
Objectives
The primary deliverable is a box with an antenna on it and adjustment for frequency and power. This box should emit a noisy ripple of a wave from it's antenna, centered around a selectable frequency.
At the end of the project, the team should be able to turn on their box and “listen” to it with a spectrum analyzer and see a moving spike of activity centered at the frequency that they tune the project to.
Motivations
In a world of cheap electronics from unknown sources, and amongst hobbyists with limited resources for testing their projects, having an understanding of a device's susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a luxury. This project is intended to enable individuals to do some practical testing on their homebuilt or purchased electronics. With a basic device that can emit a tunable spectrum of noise, a consumer can quickly test unknown devices susceptibility.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Students need to be ECE seniors, they need to be eager to innovate, and they need to be ready to flex and pivot as their project grows through the year. Students also need to be comfortable designing, ordering, and assembling PCBs.
Preferred Qualifications:Students should be proficient is soldering and desoldering small components. They should be able to read and interpret Bode plots easily. Experience with Antennas is helpful but not mandatory, as is familiarity with the I2C and or SPI protocols for on-board communication.
