Unreal Engine Network Multiplayer Game (on-campus only)

Create a first- or third-person action game with animations, network multiplayer functionality, and multiple maps by creating a player-versus-player action game in unreal engine 5. This game should allow players to connect to each other and compete.

Objectives

Basic requirements:

  • The game must playable simultaneously with multiple players competing to complete an objective (i.e. capturing a flag, holding a capture point, getting flags etc.)
  • The player character must have some animations and feedback when good or bad things happen.
  • The game must be playable on an Xinput controller, anything else is optional.

Beyond the basics, there many directions this project could go. Team members might:

  • elect to make one large map with Battle-Royale style mechanics with randomly spawning tools and weapons.
  • make multiple maps with selectable loadouts.
  • use AI to create additional threats and interactions to make a player vs player vs environment mode.
  • explore some unreal engine specific tools like lumen.

Motivations

Many of the most popular games on the market right now are player vs player action games. Undergraduates wanting a job in the gaming industry need to build their portfolios to show some level of experience designing and balancing network multiplayer games.

This project is intended to help team members can use this project both to apply their learning to game design, and also to have a project to put on their portfolio as proof of their capabilities. (Only highly motivated students who are self-driven should bid on this loosely defined project.)
