SAE-GFR Environment Simulation using Matlab and Unreal Engine

Custom environment simulation will allow for the testing of our perception pipelines in a variety of circumstances. Matlab allows for the integration of custom models as well as control over environmental variables such as sun position and weather in addition to integrating with ROS. The project will be to set up Matlab to communicate with our perception pipeline and to integrate our car models into the simulation. Additionally, a process to create custom environments will be created and documented

Objectives

  • Fall
    • Background research of previous projects and relevant papers completed.
    • Github and development environment set up.
    • ROS tutorial and assignment completed.
    • Design changes conceptualized.
    • Practice for participation in rules quiz.
    • Documentation for any changes made during Fall.
  • Winter
    • Final documentation for code completed - details on wiki as well.
    • Testing and benchmarking completed and documented.
    • UML Diagram detailing system.
    • Final edits to the code by May.

Motivations

Custom environment simulation creates more opportunities to test an autonomous vehicle without the overhead of physically bringing the car out and finding a location. Additionally, it allows us to create data with situations we may not test in real life. For example, driving during heavy rain, driving with the sun directly ahead, and driving with varying amounts of wind are all situations we could use more data on.
