OHSU Collab 2026-27: SkillTrack – A Custom Educational Portfolio App for Nursing Students

We will be working with the OHSU Simulation Lab and nursing program for this project. SkillTrack is a custom-designed mobile application developed to support undergraduate nursing students in tracking and validating their clinical skill development throughout their academic program. The app will allow students to log completed competencies, receive digital sign-offs from instructors, and view progress toward graduation requirements.

 The software engineering team will design, build, and release the app on major platforms (iOS and Android), making it freely available through app stores. The development process will include user testing with real nursing students to ensure the app aligns with actual needs and workflows in nursing education.

Objectives

  • Create a useful and secure mobile app for logging nursing skills and clinical competencies.
  • Support digital validation of skills by instructors or preceptors.
  • Provide dashboards and progress visualizations to track skill completion over semesters.
  • Allow customization for different nursing programs or institutional requirements.
  • Publish a production-ready app on app stores (Google Play & Apple App Store) for free use.

Motivations

Nursing programs require stepwise progress through required competencies. Tracking progress in one place has been previously challenging or expensive. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in at least one relevant language/framework (e.g., React Native, Flutter, Swift, Kotlin).
  • Understanding of database design and integration with mobile apps.
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong communication skills for working with nursing faculty and student testers.
  • Commitment to usability, documentation, and iterative development.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience publishing apps to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Familiarity with data security, authentication, and privacy best practices.
  • Background in dashboard/visualization design for tracking progress.
  • Knowledge of configurable or multi-tenant systems (supporting different programs).
  • Experience with user testing and incorporating feedback into app design.
  • Interest in building educational technology aligned with professional training needs.
