Food Hero Calculator for Climate Resilient Food Citizens
The Jr. Outdoor Food Navigators (JOFN) is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) through the Oregon State University ASP3IRE Center Translational Core to build climate resilience through outdoor play and positive food experience among school-aged children. One of the education and outreach tools is the Food Calculator. This calculator would take into account the carbon footprint, water footprint and nutrition values to generate an overall score to help consumers make informed, educated and sustainable food choices.
JOFN has a multidisciplinary tea, with Principal Investigators and Investigators from the College of Health, College of Forestry, Sea Grant, Extension & Engagement, and the Grand Ronde Tribe in Oregon. It has conducted two onsite in person summer camps in 2023, reaching more than 150 multi-ethnic 3rd-12th graders living in Oregon.
Objectives
- Develop a Food Hero Calculator prototype for JOFN researchers and educators to evaluate.
- Conduct key informant interviews from local to global level to improve prototype.
- Field test prototype with end users.
- Iterate prototype.
- Recommend future iterations for multicultural applications.
Motivations
This project aims to improve children's health and environmental health through climate resilient food citizenship. The Food Hero Calculator will be integrated into JOFN camps and curriculum, and beyond, such as a NOAA grant-funded program to be scaled up for regional education and outreach programs. Ultimately, it will contribute to healthy people and healthy planet.
