Forms of Migration website creation

Earlier this spring, OSU-Cascades faculty member Jennifer A. Reimer (American Studies, Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing) and colleague Dr. Stefan Maneval (Freie University, Berlin) celebrated the release of their co-edited project, Forms of Migration: Global Perspectives on Im/migrant Art & Culture. An international collaboration two years in the making, the book explores how art and literature shape our understanding of global migration. Written from a large variety of disciplines, the book is a rich collection of essays, poetry, creative nonfiction, interviews, and visual material. It comprises analyses of literature, diasporic fashion, cinema, music, and mixed media installations, as well as photographic work, collages, drawings, and performances turned into writing. The volume shows how innovative storytelling and artistic material offer a chance to apprehend migration differently, to grasp the complexity of migration processes and to challenge common perceptions of im/migrant experiences.

Our mission now is to create a web platform to serve as the digital home of the Forms of Migration research and arts collective.  We seek to not only showcase existing text, image, and video on the website, but also provide new content (which will be developed and provided by Reimer, Maneval and their external partners).

Objectives

  1. Design a website for the Forms of Migration Research & Arts Collective
    • display names and profiles of affiliates
    • link to a selection of relevant content (excerpts from book)
    • display list of relevant publications with citations generated from bibtex format
    • searchable display of past publications, presentations, and tools
    • embed audio and video
    • maintain list of URLs of recent news or other events
    • maintain database of governmental, non-governmental and educational programs and institutes related to migration research
  2. Design and connect to a cloud-hosted database
  3. Incrementally improve layout and CSS components
  4. Deploy finished website

Motivations

Currently, there exists no one digital hub for linking scholars, artists, and im/migrants around the world who are working to advocate for im/migrant rights, advocacy, and awareness raising.  We seek to break new ground by providing a single portal to connect innovators and advocates. We desire a custom and interactive website built for our tasks. We desire an interactive site built with bootstrap or similar libraries to enable responsiveness and the delivery of multimedia content.
