Bee Hive Monitoring System

This project will produce a beehive monitoring system to record analytics about the hive. The system will monitor the weight of the hive, inside and outside temperature, inside humidity, and attempt to track the number of bees entering and exiting the hive. The system will transmit the data at least 450 ft away from the hive to a receiver device. The receiver will display the data on a webpage for further analysis by the user. The hive unit will also act as a data backup and store the hive data in case of receiver malfunction The system must be able to stay operational through the night, using a small solar panel to power and maintain the onboard battery enough to last through the night.

Objectives

The system needs to accurately measure various metrics about a bee hive and report them back to a webpage for the user to monitor their beehive remotely. The system will need to do the following

  • Measure the weight of the beehive
  • Measure inside and outside temperature
  • Measure inside humidity
  • Track bees entering and exiting the hive: (Reserved for Graduate student)
  • Transmit data at least 450 feet away
  • Display data on a webpage for further analysis
    • Selectable timeframe of data to be displayed
    • Configurable display capabilities of data
  • Solar power & Battery power
    • Run system through the night
    • Track battery level

Motivations

I have gotten Into bee keeping and want to monitor different metrics about my hive to observe the hive health. Of course this isn't 100% accurate of how healthy the bees are however it will allow me to see the weight of the hive, increase over the season. I will also be able to monitor how the temperature and humidity of different seasons impact the bees. There has been astonishing decline in bee colony's over recent years. My hope is that being able to obtain real time information from the hive will help alert bee keepers of struggling hives. This will help prioritize what hives the bee keeper needs to check on first.
