Avionics Systems Design Team (ASDT)

The Avionics Systems Design Team (ASDT) is dedicated to designing and manufacturing custom, in-house flight computers that transmit sensor and GPS data, manage parachute deployment, and interact with other flight computers onboard student-built rockets. If the project is developed in time, the flight computers may be flown on rockets launched by OSU AIAA teams in the spring. The work is focused on the following areas:

  • 80%  avionics design, building, and testing
  • 10% Support ECE Junior Design II avionics projects
  • 10% Support AIAA teams through consultation

Objectives

Subteams:

PCB Design & Sensors  - Design a custom PCB that connects all of our sensors to the main microcontroller. This will heavily involve researching different sensors and learning how to implement them for our needs.

Battery & Power Regulation - Create a rechargeable battery bank that will produce all the DC voltages needed for operation. We will likely stick with LiPo, but all elements are subject to change.

Code & Data Management - We plan to use an Arduino microcontroller to control our on-board sensors, as well as send data back to the ground for teams to store.

Radio Communications - The focus of this group is radio telemetry, including an on-aircraft radio transmitter and a ground antenna tracker.

Majors needed:

  • 2+ Computer Science
  • 2+ Electrical Engineering

Motivations

We are seeking electrical engineering and computer science majors who are experienced in any of the concepts within the “keywords” section or want to learn those skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills while getting hands-on ECE experience! You may also mentor 1st-3rd-year volunteers who assist your subteam.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • We're looking for individuals who are curious about/have experience with avionics, flight diagnostics, radio communications, power regulation, or circuit design for rocketry applications or general PCB design and fabrication
  • Coding; C/C++, Python, MATLAB
  • ENGR 201 & 202

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Willingness to learn
