Classroom Virtual Reality for Heavy Civil Operations

This project seeks to use available game engine and web technologies to provide students of civil and construction engineering with an immersive learning experience. The project involves the creation of web-hosted 3D content that will be access using QR codes provided to students. The students can then use and interact with the 3D scene to understand more about the construction operations being discussed in the classroom.

Objectives

The deliverable will be an application that deploys 3D animations on the web on a website that can be accessible through use of a QR code. The following objectives are defined for this project:

  1. Create multiple 3D animations of construction operations in a game engine
  2. Host and run these on a website
  3. Enable users to access and view 3D animations (that allow navigation) using a QR code on their mobile phone

Motivations

There is a disconnect between the classroom teaching and real-world application of concepts in engineering that severely hamper student understanding. This is especially so for teaching civil and construction engineering courses wherein textual descriptions just cannot prepare the student for what they will observe on the site. This project thus seeks to bring the real-world context into the classroom through the use of easily accessible virtual reality scenes of real-world construction sites.
