Soil parameters measurement and monitoring

Design and implement a system to measure and track information about soil over time.    The system should provide useful information for active management of irrigation.

Objectives

The system should have the following attributes:
Measures soil moisture and temperature over a range of depths.   Other information such as pH may be of interest.
Measures above-ground parameters including temperature, humidity, and light.   Incoming moisture from rainfall or irrigation may be useful.
Transmits data periodically for collection and display.
Solar and/or battery powered to allow unattended operation for 6 months.

Wireless communication over a distance of 100 meters or more.

A system for collecting and displaying the data.

Documentation and user guide.

Motivations

Optimizing water use in farming is critical for maximizing yields while conserving resources.   Knowing the water content of soil at various depths can provide useful information for managing irrigation.    It can also be useful for characterizing soil and in agricultural research.
