Veterinary application containing a drug calculator and reference values for a broad range of species
This application would be a very useful tool for veterinarians and veterinary students working on a large variety of animals. This would allow the vet to type in a drug name and the application would tell a drug dose and calculate a dose from the patient's body weight.
This would be exceptionally helpful where often times now we have paper 'formularies' or need to search online for drug doses. This takes too much time. The application could also have another section which told them the normal values for heart rate, temperature and respiration rate which are crucial to understanding the health of the animal and vary greatly from specie to specie. Blood values (total blood cell counts and biochemistry values) could also be in the application as references.
Objectives
The project objective is to create an Android and iPhone compatible application for use on cell phones. This application would
calculate the total dose of a drug needed for a particular patient. Drug doses will vary by specie. I would like to include a drug
calculator for dogs, cats, horses, small ruminants (goats and sheep), camelids (alpacas and llamas), cattle and pigs. Additionally,
physical exam parameters and blood values would also be available for each of these species. Further additions could include
veterinary cardiology, oncology, dermatology and ophthalmology. Really there is so much we could pack into an application that would
be so helpful for veterinarians who need to be capable in a lot of different areas of veterinary medicine.
Motivations
There are some drug calculators that exist for dogs and cats, but no current calculator is available for large animals and farm animals. As veterinary students and farm vets work with these animals, an application that assists them to do their job will be highly sought after.
