AR Popup Storybook Companion App

This project aims to create a whole new generation of readers! This app or website creates virtual popup books in the form of an AR app. The app is meant to be a companion to physical books, but can also be used with public domain stories (built-in). Eventually, the app/website could be used as a platform to host AR experiences for hundreds of popular children's books (and a heck of a lot cheaper than popups).

IMPORTANT: This project does not have a formal industry or faculty mentor and is student team managed and directed.

Objectives

The deliverable will be an AR app coupled with simple content to make the experience of reading a storybook come alive. Requirements: >>scan a QR code OR recognize a book cover to choose AR experience >>AR cover scene invites readers in >>add AR page turn buttons or recognize a new page or scan a QR code to turn page >>display animated AR content that hovers over the pages of the book. Stretch Goals: >>Add text to speech narration >>Add multiple books >>Add ability to extend the system using cloud-hosted content

IMPORTANT: The focus should be on development, not asset creation. Unity and Unreal have asset collections, many free. Other free game assets are available online. Do not spend time creating assets (this is a CS course, after all). Reimbursement for up to $100 per person per term for any Capstone expense is available from COE.

IMPORTANT: This project does not have a formal industry or faculty mentor and is student team managed and directed. If you choose this project for a one-term Capstone such as CS 467, make sure to manage the deliverables for that time frame. Alternatively, if you choose this project for a 3-term capstone (such as CS 461, 462, and 463) you will be expected to make the project more robust (and to determine how best to do this). The Instructor and TAs are available to answer any questions you may have about the project or provide resources, etc.

Motivations

Let's be honest. Kids are on their computers, consoles, and phones a lot more than they read these days. Let's reverse this trend a bit!
