Malware Analysis

There are literally thousands of viruses and malware floating around on the Internet. This project will thoroughly document the incremental process, findings, and pitfalls of analyzing malicious software (malware) within the confines of a safe virtual environment. Note: You should have a machine capable of running VMWare.

Objectives

This project will be divided into two primary objectives (1) establish an isolated virtual environment consisting of multiple virtual machines connected to a common virtual network, and (2) use this virtual environment to document the steps taken and results of both basic static and basic dynamic malware analysis on one or more key pieces of example malware provided by the project customer.

The output of this research project is a thoroughly documented report of how to accomplish these two objectives. Every piece of malware will potentially lead to new findings and require new methods and tools, but the fundamentals of setting up a safe environment and the application of static and dynamic analysis will be common of all malware analysis endeavors
