How much do you fidget in class?

Develop a series/network of sensors that can be attached to a classroom chair to measure and record the student's movement over time during class.

Objectives


  1. Identify the appropriate sensors, determine the quantity needed, and determine the proper placement on a chair to capture the micro movement of the students during class time.
  2. Develop a prototype that includes the sensors and the associated codes/software to export the data from the sensor.
  3. Demonstrate using the prototype the ease of setting up and taking down the sensors on a classroom chair, and the non-intrusive and non-invasive nature of the sensors on the chair for the user.

Motivations


Research shows that some amount of fidgeting during class time is beneficial to student learning; however, too much or too little fidgeting indicates that students are not learning effectively. To determine the appropriate amount of fidgeting, we require an instrument capable of measuring fidgeting.
