Sim Firefighter

This is a 2D or 3D simulation game where the user battles wildfires.

Objectives

This will be a single-player game where the player takes the role of a manager in the NICC (National Interagency Coordination Center). They will have a limited pool of resources (money, firefighters, equipment, etc.) with which to try and keep wildfires under control, and prevent them from growing too large or endangering people and property. The game would use a set of simple algorithms to determine where fires start and how they spread. Wind patterns, humidity, terrain, water, etc. The player could then attempt to control the fires using simulations of real suppression techniques and tactics, such as backburns, controlled burns, cold trailing, putting up barriers, etc. They could also, if they have enough budget, deploy helicopters, tanker airplanes, smokejumpers (firefighters who parachute into remote areas), etc. The goal for this game would be to offer the player a challenging and fun experience, while simultaneously educating them about the complex nature of wildfires and the tools and methods that are used to control them in real life. The development team will want to spend some time researching these subjects in order to make sure the game’s simulation has an appropriate level of accuracy.

Stretch goals could include:

  • Cell-based simulation and gameplay
  • Variable simulation time to speed up or slow down the simulation
  • Time-based weather patterns (wind and rain)
  • Players use weather forecast info for planning and placing assets
  • Players can earn money in various ways, in order to purchase/use certain assets (tankers, helicopters, etc)
  • Move assets where they are needed

Note: You are free to use free assets and content packs for the Game engine as long you cite the source.

Motivations

This project will help others learn about the importance of fire prevention, the things they can do to help, and the bravery and skill of the people in the Forest Service & other organizations who work hard to protect us when things go wrong.
