Our project objective was to design a pet door with a user interface features to control the locking mechanism through a timer and sensors to detect a pet permitting the door to open. The development of the electronic pet door project encapsulates all the expected and additional features a system of this kind requires. Foremost including the frame of the pet door itself as well as the housing for the electronics involved to incorporate the features or requirements of the design. These features implemented include the sensors to detect a pet entering within range of the door, a locking mechanism for the door, a user display to enter a time for the door to remain unlocked, LED’s to indicate if the door is locked or unlocked and press buttons as the user’s interface with the device. Our design features a 3D printed frame, which became a difficulty to print in time for the project deadline until we contacted multiple printing services to get all our parts finished in time. Other difficulties included unscheduled lab meeting times and online learning for the whole duration of the course. The size of the frame was larger than expected as it could have been reduced to even half the size for this project.
