Our project was to build an app for our client which would allow them to easily measure thousands of trees located in research plots scattered around the Pacific Northwest. The app was to be built within the "Tables" app provided by the Open Data Kit X (ODK-X) toolsuite. ODK-X is a collection of both server software and Android apps which allow for the easy creation of such digital data collection systems, while managing things like syncing with a remote server out of the box. Tables itself essentially is a web browser with some special JavaScript libraries which allow for communication with other ODK-X services on the app, like the database. This allowed us to essentially build a website which met our clients needs which would then live on the various Android devices our client will use. We worked closely with our client to develop the app to fit their workflow exactly as they needed it to, with all the required forms and data validation checks to ensure the quality of the data they collect in the field stays high. Our project allowed our client to transition away from the now somewhat antiquated devices they had been using to something more modern which can run on pretty much any Android device. Hopefully our project will make things a fair bit easier for those working as part of our client's field crews.
