The purpose of this project is to create a device that will serve to deter birds from flying into windows. Birds cannot perceive glass and mistake the reflection off of glass for the natural landscape, thus resulting in collisions with the buildings’ windows. Our project involves developing a device that mounts to the outside of buildings that actively senses when birds are approaching the window and flashes light at the birds to deter them from the sides of buildings during both the day and nighttime. The microcontroller(OpenMv) applied the frame differencing and blob detection to find the change of current image by comparing it with the pre-stored background picture. We installed the solar panel to charge the battery through the charge controller. To increase the detection accuracy, we assembled different sensors(ultrasound and passive infrared ray) and programmed them to work together. By adapted these technologies, the device able to find the optimal deterrence method and work remotely. We test the system with unpredictable test subjects and figure out the favorable detection angle. For future improvements, we recommend adding one more PIR sensor and place them on the side of the device. The sensors should adopt the waterproof model. The entire system should run on one power source rather than two, and has a power switch that is accessible from the outside of the enclosure.
