PetWatch is a system for remotely keeping watch over your furry friend! The product includes a wearable for your pet which can be attached to one of their limbs using a wrappable bandage (not included), and a website and android app through which you can remotely monitor your pet’s movement. The system is primarily intended for watching over a pet’s recovery from injury or surgery. We use an accelerometer to track the movement of a specific limb and transmit the data over wifi from the wearable device to a database. The android app will notify you if your pet has moved above a set movement threshold which allows you to have a quick response if your pet is in danger of injuring themselves. The most challenging part of this project had to do with the android app and real-time graphing. Eventually this challenge was overcome and our graph updates itself each time new data is added to the database. This was a huge accomplishment and allows the user to see their pet’s movement as it is made, which is a big improvement to our product. One area where this product could be improved in the future is by making a wearable app (for Apple watch or FitBit) so that the user can get a notification without having to pull out their phone.
