Sumo Robot 03 ECE342-SP22
By
The purpose of this project was to build a small robot that could push other robots/objects out of a circular rink autonomously. The robot had to follow the rules and regulations for mini-sumo competitions. The mini-sumo bot was programmed with an Arduino Nano. For object/bot detection, five digital IR distance sensors were used; one on both the left and right side of the bot and three in front. To detect the edge of the ring, two IR reflectance sensors were used. Two DC 12-V motors were used that were controlled by a 10A motor controller. The system was powered by a 12V LiPo battery. A Bluetooth module was used to read sensor values in real time over a serial monitor, start the bot’s sumo sequence, and to control the motors remotely if wanted. All components were connected using a custom designed PCB and contained in a custom 3D printed enclosure. This robot was crowned champion of the 2022 Spring Junior Design Expo mini-sumo tournament.
