Nugget Prospecting Tool

Arduino
Hardware

Our project is the nugget prospecting tool, more specifically called a gold discriminating underwater metal detector. Our project partner was interested in an improved and less expensive design for a metal detector capable of only reacting to gold. They intended to use the metal detector in gold sniping, which is where people will dive in rivers and look in crevices and under rocks in hopes of finding gold. In order to implement this we had to design coils that would allow our system to tell what metal was present. An oscillator was used to generate a 10 kHz wave to drive the coils. This wave would then be received and compared to the generated wave, and by that phase shift the metal present could be determined. We successfully designed the signal generator as well as the programming and circuitry necessary to determine a phase shift of two sine waves. The main challenges faced were difficulty researching due to little material on these kinds of advanced metal detectors being public. We also faced challenges in finding an optimal design for the coils in order to detect the small pieces of gold when gold sniping. Future iterations could look into off the shelf coil products in order to more reliably test.
