The Low Cost CAN Logger records data from vehicles like forklifts. The data logger device plugs into the diagnostics port of a vehicle and records messages sent through the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus - the machine's internal communication system. The logger contains an SD card with a storage space of 32gb where CAN messages are stored. The system also implements a Bluetooth module which is able to send data to a client device through Bluetooth. Some of the key achievements of the project include low manufacturing cost, high maintainability, and high repairability. The biggest challenge for this project was being able to process and store data packets fast enough to not miss any packets being sent through CAN. In the future, the project should implement time stamps and RTC (real-time clock) as well as uninterrupted power supply so that the system can safely unmount the SD card on power loss.
