Electric Formula Racing Vehicle - Global Formula Racing (2019-2020)

GFR’s goal as a racing club is to win. But this doesn’t just mean making the fastest car- it means making the best designed car that can win the most points. Winning points requires more than just a fast car and a good driver. A massive portion of points are awarded for the design decisions in the car and how different components are incorporated into the vehicle. This means that as a systems member I must know what decisions will garner our team with the most points while also meeting the expectations of what our team wants to do with the car. Each race has its own point system which are listed on their respective websites. By compiling these criteria for points into a single document, we can understand and decide which parts of the car must be modified to ensure the most points are earned. A large part of gaining points when it comes to design is ensuring that you have the proper validation and testing done. If the judge sees a decision that is revolutionary and smart, they still won’t give you many points for it unless you can provide the documentation and validation for the decision. Overall, it is our job to ensure that the system receives the most points and as a result becomes a winning vehicle. This requires understanding the system, the rules we are working under, and the ways we can gain the most points. I will need to do the research required to justify decisions and validate these decisions through thorough testing. The risk of this is that should a test not work, we are wasting valuable time and resources that the GFR doesn’t have a lot of. To stay competitive, it is important that I am aware of as many solutions as possible, the reasons for these solutions, and how to best implement them into the vehicle.
