Smartfin is an electronic longboard fin that can replace a longboard’s fin and collects real-time temperature, wave, and GPS data. Data is then transmitted to the cloud and available for analysis via a database. With that being said, the team was able to successfully transmit battery life and GPS data to a serial monitor on a website. Smartfin makes use of Particle.io (a manufacturer of microcontrollers that can connect to the cloud) to handle software and connectivity-related tasks. It is through Particle.io that Smartfin is able to transmit data via a wireless connection to a cloud database, then display data through a serial monitor on Particle’s web console. A notable accomplishment for this project is that the team was able to transmit GPS coordinates to the serial monitor accurately. If the testing started at the Oregon State University Valley Library, and then the serial monitor coordinates were imputed into Google Earth, the location would read the Valley Library. Another accomplishment for this project was being able to witness all the singular blocks come together to create a main system to not only prove most of the engineering requirements but to also improve the team’s knowledge about technical engineering designs.
